The CDS exam — Combined Defence Services Examination — is conducted twice a year by UPSC for recruitment of candidates to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy, and Indian Air Force Academy. Only unmarried graduates are eligible for IMA, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy while both unmarried and married graduates can apply for OTA.

CDSE Eligibility Criteria
For IMA & Naval Academy
- Graduate in any discipline from a recognised university
- Age: 19 to 24 years (IMA) | 19 to 22 years (Naval Academy)
- Unmarried male Indian citizens only
- Must clear CDS Written + SSB Interview + Medical
- Vision and physical standards as per respective service norms
For OTA Chennai
- Graduate in any discipline from a recognised university
- Age: 19 to 25 years
- Both married and unmarried candidates eligible
- Male and Female candidates both eligible
- Must clear CDS Written (English + GK only) + SSB Interview
Physical Standards
- Height: Minimum 157.5 cm for males, 152 cm for females
- Weight proportionate to height and age as per Army Medical norms
- Vision standards vary by branch — must be confirmed at Medical Examination
- Must be physically and mentally fit — no history of major illness or surgery
CDSE Selection Process
- Stage 1 — CDS Written Exam (UPSC): Conducted twice a year in February and November. Papers include English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics (for IMA/Navy/AF). OTA requires only English and GK.
- Stage 2 — SSB Interview (5 Days): Service Selection Board evaluates Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) through a 5-day process including psychology tests, GTO outdoor tasks, group discussions, and personal interview.
- Stage 3 — Medical Examination: Comprehensive medical exam by the respective service's Medical Board. Candidates must meet vision, height, weight, and overall fitness norms.
- Stage 4 — UPSC Merit List: Final merit list prepared by UPSC combining written exam marks and SSB marks. Candidates are allotted academies based on merit and preference.
- Stage 5 — Training at Academy: Selected candidates join IMA (1.5 years), OTA (49 weeks), Naval Academy, or Air Force Academy for officer training before being commissioned.
